A pilgrimage is a journey undertaken to get closer to something sacred, or for a sacred purpose. Every religion has them – journeys to the shrine of a saint, or to some other place sanctified by time and prayer. Even a non-religious person might travel to the grave of a loved one as an act of remembrance; how much more will a religious believer seek out a place where the mundane world touches the divine.

A pilgrimage resembles a retreat in disengaging us from the workaday world and its distractions. But a retreat involves staying for a time in a quiet place. The journey is primarily an inward one, whereas the physical journeying involved in making a pilgrimage itself serves as a symbol of the soul’s lifetime journey towards God, and such symbols may become occasions of grace.

A pilgrimage or retreat is therefore a golden opportunity both to pray and to learn. To pray, because the very act of going on one is a kind of prayer. To learn, because we learn by paying attention, and there is no better way than this to focus on the “one thing needful”.

We have been involved in organizing retreats and pilgrimages for some years, mostly for young people. Now ResSource is planning to offer a number of retreat and pilgrimage opportunities to various kinds of groups. If you are interested in any of the following ideas in particular, please email us.
